Damodaram Sanjivaiah: India’s First Dalit Chief Minister and Social Reformer
Damodaram Sanjivaiah (1921–1972) holds a significant place in India’s political history as the first Dalit leader to become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and later serve as a Union Minister. His contributions to social justice, political inclusivity, and public welfare continue to be remembered decades after his tenure.
Born on February 14, 1921, in Peddapadu village of the Madras Presidency (present-day Andhra Pradesh), Sanjivaiah rose from humble beginnings to occupy some of the highest offices in government. A member of the Indian National Congress, he became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1960 at the age of 39, making him one of the youngest leaders to assume the role at the time. His appointment was considered a landmark moment in Indian politics, symbolising the growing representation of marginalized communities in governance.
During his tenure as Chief Minister (1960–1962), Sanjivaiah emphasized social welfare, education, and measures to uplift backward classes. His administration focused on expanding access to education for disadvantaged groups, a step seen as critical in addressing systemic inequality.
After his term in Andhra Pradesh, he went on to serve at the national level. He held the position of Union Minister for Labour and Employment in the central government, where he worked on policies aimed at labour rights and social security.
Sanjivaiah’s legacy is not confined to his political office. His career is widely regarded as an example of perseverance against social barriers, and he is remembered as a reform-minded leader who sought to expand opportunities for underprivileged sections of society.
He passed away in 1972, but his contributions remain an important chapter in India’s democratic journey. Institutions, roads, and public initiatives across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana continue to be named in his memory, underscoring his enduring impact on the region’s social and political fabric.
